You can look inside the cooking pot to see when the meat is well through, and you can pull the pot off the fire right away. This works even standing meters away. I think this way you can go kilometers and still utilize the pot and it's interior.
I've only tried the furnace but I suspect the same behaviour on camping tripods or even gas stoves.
