At some point between putting my compass into my pack from my hands it had glitched pointing in the wrong direction. I knew very explicitly which way was north and which direction it had been pointing but when I took it out again it was stuck almost exactly pointing south instead. I also found I could not drop the compass from my pack or right click it in my inventory despite being able to interact with and drop other items.
