I found a damaged Fireaxe in Cernaya Polana and later found a green paint can, so I decided to paint it but to my surprise the weapon didn't changed it's color but still changed it's name and reduced the can percentage.
Just happened to me so I haven't been able to reproduce.

same here, prestine axe painted black and green, the name changes but not the model, not even the one in the "inspect" window

Yep, I can confirm this too. Was wondering if it doesn't work anymore, so I went to search an Can of paint. Used it on the axe and the axe just changed the name, but not the skin or colour.
In my opinion this is just a minor issue. But should be fixed anyway.
Painting other weapons works properly, so I experienced it only with the firefighters axe.
