When you open a can of food on 1st floor without having space in your inventory, it falls through the floor to ground floor and can be picked up there, if you find it. It also falls outside the house sometimes, if you happen to stand too near to the wall when you open the cans.

Also, items you dropped appear meters away like if you threw them instead of dropping.
