Game constantly freezes at random intervals
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Playing on latest Stable Branch 0.49.124972

My game constantly freezes resulting in me having to Ctrl+Alt+Del to the desktop and tabbing to DayZ and prossing delete to "Ending Task" from Task manager... I can only use my Keyboard for this, because using my mouse to click brings up DayZ... and then its just a black screen.

These freezes are random and can happen while running, checking the inventory sometimes even on the menu screen.
The time in which they occur is also random, can happen anywhere between 1 min to 1 hour in- game, but it mostly feels like 10-20 min mark when I get a freeze.

When this occurs, my screen just plainly freezes, there is no black screen or switching to desktop...
However the game is sometimes still responsive, as I can still hear myself walk around, shoot guns, and can hear ambient sound, but the picture is not updating.

I have updated my GFX drivers and turned ALL settings to low as well as disable AA and AtoC but to no avail...

Simply Put: I CANT PLAY THE GAME

Hi Count_Grishnackh,
has this only been an issue since 972 or have you had such issues before?
We have been looking into some performance problems recently, hopefully the fixes might help you as well.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the response.
Its been happening just before 972... I've taken a LONG break from DayZ (gaming in general dude to personal reasons) and only recently started playing again. From what I can remember, I could play flawlessly back in April/May... but now I have this problem...
Also its the only game that game I own that gets this kind of freeze/crash... all my other games work 100% so I'm fairly positive its not a hardware/system problem.

While trying to troubleshoot this, Ive come across a quite few posts on the net where people have the exact or very similar issues to mine.
Thanks again
Count_G

Side Note: Decided to try experimental last night, and I get the same problem :(

hy Count... Only to check, do you have some oc on CPU or GPU?

I have also this issue with my GTX780 SLI OC'ed. All other Games works pretty wellt, but DayZ crashes when I jump the 1200Mhz mark with the cards. if I lock it down to 1110 also DayZ works quite well.

So it might be a HW Problem even when the other games work properly, because dayz needs more Power than other games:)

Same with CPU, still other Games are fine with my OC on 4.3Ghz, for DayZ I have to put it down to 4 to avoid a freeze.

Hey mist3r,

Thanks for the response, honestly Im going to try anything at this point cause I just cant understand whats happening with my DayZ
To answer...
My CPU is @ 3.9... So nothing too extensive as far as CPU OC.
And my GPU, the Powercolor PCS+ R9 290 according to the net is factory overclocked to 1040Mhz on the core and 1350Mhz on the vRam.
Any ideas? Anything I could try and test?

Just to try take off the CPU OC and the power the GPU with more volts or try going @stock from original GPU performance, just to check... Guess if you have the problem still with everything at stock you can eliminate Oc as a cause:)

Just an update:

Reverted everything to stock, besides the factory OC'd GPU
Checked RAM with memtest - no errors
Checked SSD(OS) and HDD(Steam location) with CrystalDisk - no errors
Completely wiped my SSD and installed fresh win 8.1 x64
Re installed GFX drivers on clean OS
Re installed Steam
Re installed dayz (for the 3rd time)

It still is not working

I DONT KNOW WHAT MORE I CAN DO

Terribly sorry for your trouble.
This issue is quite puzzling to us as well.
Have there been any improvements recently? Some tweaks might have affected your situation.

Andy

Hey Andy,
Seems I have found out why my game has been crashing.
After all my troubleshooting I was pretty sure it wasn't my system or hardware and because DayZ is in alpha assumed that it was the culprit.

Anyways played some Alien Isolation a while ago, it too crashed similarly to DayZ, but the DirectX pop-up error I saw lead me to believe it was in fact my GFX card.... the error said something along the lines of... "The video card has been physically removed from the system... etc", so it was either not getting power (I have more than enough) or somehow disconnecting itself.

Long story short: It was a brand new card, so I didn't even think about it being faulty...I tested my old HD5870 and there were no crashes, so I sentthe R9 290 back to the place I bought it, they installed new BIOS, and its been working 100% ever since.
Please close /resolve this topic.

Sorry for all the trouble, but thanks for helping with this problem.
Im off to play DayZ again... whoohoo :D

Hi,
happy to hear that you managed to resolve the issue!
We have been suspecting that the problem would be on your end, but still wanted to ensure everything was configured correctly on our part, which is why this took so long
Have fun in the game!

Andy
