[SUGGESTION] - A simple system to prevent SERVER HOPPING!
New, WishlistPublic

Description

Dear developer team,

I'll try to make this short, so you don't get tired reading.

Just to sum it up, here is the current issue: Server hopping

  1. People reach a location with a high loot chance
  2. They start going on empty servers and pick up all the loot

Results:

==> People get geared up too fast and without any real effort.

==> People are likely to spawn near you if you're the one looting.

==> People won't move around as much as they would, if they had to

get to another place for better loot. (Faster camping -> less encounters -> less realism)

The system:

  1. If a player disconnects from a server and then rejoins at any time, he will spawn in the same location.

Just like it is right now

  1. If a player disconnects from a server and then joins a different server, he will have to wait 5 minutes and then be spawned in a random location.

The 5 minute timer is necessary to keep people from abusing the random spawn to get around the map faster.
A random spawn shouldn't be a problem for people, as it only makes the game more of an adventure (you have to orientate yourself)

  1. If someone is NEAR you, you can send them an invite to a "friendship agreement". When it is being accepted and you switch servers together, you will then be spawned together at a random location.

"Friends" could abuse this to get together without having to find each other.
//Thats why they need to require both, the "friendship agreement" and a close distance to each other when switching servers.

I hope I could make clear that this system is coming at pretty much no costs for the game as it works, and will only improve it bigtime.

[Please let me know in the notes if you see any problems with the system, and I'll make up my mind about it ;)]

Greetings

I agree that server hopping is an issue atm. I'm voting your suggestion down for some reasons:

  1. You would have to distinguish the situations for

a) Player disconnects on purpose
b) Player disconnects because of server restart/connection issues
c) Player disconnects because of game crash
just to name a few. IMO it would be highly unfair - at least at this state of the development process - to give Players who just expierienced a game crash a 5 minutes penalty. Also we already had this high time penalties for server hopping, nobody was happy with that ...

  1. Spawning at a random location after server change makes absolutely no sense. This would make the whole situation highly unrealistic.
  2. Friend invites ... would mean you basically get a tracker for people running around somewhere close to your location.

@steen

It does not matter why a player is leaving a server (crash, restart or anything)
if he attempts to connect to this server ip, he will be playing the character
in the location that is associated with this servers ip.

I don't think the 5 min penalty is a problem. Get some cookies and something to drink and once youre in, this is were you'll stay for the next 2 or 3 hours anyways.

Spawning at a random location, is what counters what really is unrealistic: having new loot magically appearing (server hopping)

The agreement thing would obviously have to work in a way in which it doesn't influence the game negatively. I'm certain the devs would be able to figure out a way.

Thanks for letting me know about your concerns, and keep bringing more!

you realize with this system if you are unhappy with the server performance and you switch server you will have to wait 5 minutes and spawn in a random location on the new server, right? I doubt you would like it yourself.

@app0815 I agree I server Hop a lot trying to find better performance.

My suggestion is that to prevent "loot hopping" any hop that is detected in a loot area is that the player is spawned in a "local but safe" location.

EDIT: No amount of time delay ect. is going to STOP "loot hopping" when the user can see the amount of users on a server and think that the time/risk of a walk from any spawn point is less than then the risk of spawn in a high loot area..
