When using the map to command an AI who is currently manning a mortar pit to fire illumination shells from a high elevation (Castle Monfort) to a low elevation (St. Pierre) the shells will "burst" extremely high and fail to illuminate ground at their target.
It appears as though the shells are bursting in order to illuminate a target which is on the same elevation as the mortar pit, as they properly illuminate Castle Monfort when fire from Western Heights, but not Vernon when fired from Western Heights or Castle Monfort.
