I experienced exactly the same through wall glitch at the appartment with the broken stairs. A zombie hit me while I was in the corner near the stairs and I was knocked through the walls and into a large room under the complex with no way out. The zombies seem to get stuck down there too.

I can confirm this is the case for me as well.
