The issue resolved itself when I installed a newer graphics card. With the HD 4870 512MB card it would crash randomly. I installed a R9 280 3GB and the crashing issue has disappeared.

I assume it has something to do with the texture loading, VRAM size, driver issues, or DirectX version as my system has not changed other than the new graphics card and newer driver.
