I witnessed my gear disappear out of my inventory as if someone was looting my body, but I was alive and concious. It happened to my friend moments later as well.

Unfortunately, this problem regarding being stripped of gear is a known issue that has previously been reported as a private issue (probably why it didn't turn up as a search result for you). BattlEye has been made aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
