I've noticed when using either the binoculars or long range scope on the mosin that zed's aggro from MUCH further away, as if the trigger on aggro is tied to a players ability to see them or something. I've managed to somehow aggro zeds that would be impossible to even really see with the unaided eye when using the binoculars or long range scope.
