I just got DayZ a day ago and finally got to play it. When I tried to join a friend I got the "Please wait screen". I though nothing of it and after I a while of nothing, i tried again. I spawned in unconscious that time. After that I chose another server, that time it worked and I played for a time. Later, I tried to join a different server and again spawned unconscious. I lost all of my gear when I tried again. I know logging off while unconscious kills you but no matter how long a waited I did not regain consciousness.

Use Steam to join a friend. (Via the Friends tab, then right click and hit join)

Happening to me on my husband's game and mine.
Mine: just bought it, can't spawn at all.
His: Someone shot me, I died, can spawn at all. "unconscious.. then.. you are dead."
Separate accounts, any server.

This is what happens to me too, except I haven't been fortunate enough to successfully get into the game. I spawn unconscious, I attempt to respawn when I get in it just tells me I am dead. So I join the server unconscious, and respawn in dead.
EDIT: Okay, so after many, many attempts to join servers I finally got in, and after getting in that one time I have been fine to get into servers ever since. Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but if you keep trying eventually it will work. I was attempting to join servers for about 20-30 minutes before I got in.
