For the record, I did not fail but I did see real names (first or first and last) on no less than 1/2 and more like 3/4 of players at the time. I'd say I jumped around to maybe a dozen servers so give or take - upwards of a couple hundred names.

Yes it is a fail on the individual for basic computer/internet security - however I believe this fail absolutely cuts both ways. The proof is in the fact that real names were displayed in the first place due to an added "feature" in a video game. You may not recall people shitting bricks when blizzard wanted to link battle.net and facebook accounts during SC2 beta.

I've also got $5 that says defaulting everyone to "player" would be a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to code than hooking their login name. Someone thought this was a good idea and it isn't.

Name change as a feature = Great! Glad it was introduced!

Hell, being able to use something other than a Steam ID in a game where people get butthurt at the cyclic rate is a smart move.

Oh hey, you inputted your real life information into anywhere on a computer instead of remaining behind an anonymous handle. Good job, you fail at basic computer and internet safety.

Like COUNTLESS users, I logged in unaware of the change and found that my character name was the same as my computer login credentials. A "FEATURE" that defaults to publicly displaying information which may be sensitive is absolutely unacceptable.

Feature all you want based off the Steam ID or a Generic "Player" - DO NOT FOR ANY REASON DEFAULT TO AN INDIVIDUAL'S COMPUTER LOGIN NAME. This information could be, and quite often is, sensitive personal information.

I mean no one EVER gets mad in DayZ... not ever...

It's not a bug, you can now rename your character. Just click on the text of your name and you can modify your in game name. In other words, it is no longer linked to your steam name. It's a new feature.

I also posted about this - same for me

do what Ugly says. this is a FEATURE not a bug. character names are changeable now on the main menu. by default your name will be your account name on your computer.

in the Main Menu of DayZ, your name appears in the bottom right corner.
Click on it and you can modify your name.

Rustle is right on this one. No information, even insignificant as first name should be displayed without proper consent. This just opens up the company to number of lawsuits.
