Blood regeneration works fine. Eat alot (like 5 or 6 cans of baked beans and then drink till you're full), and then you'll have healing status, after a while your blood is regenerated and you should have healthy status.

It does, you have to achieve the "healthy" status. If your blood is lower than maximum, it will say "healing" instead, I've done it before.
