A gun shot from a mosin or any other gun 100 meters away sometimes sound like they are shot 5 meters away, and sometimes when people are shooting at you 5 meters away, it sounds like they are 100 meters away.

Also yesterday evening I witnessed a player firing an m4 from approx 200m away. I had clear LOS and saw the muzzle flash but did not hear the sound of gunfire.

Confirmed. I would also like to add that when playing with a squad, sometime half the squad will hear gunfire and run for cover, while other will hear no report.
