Since sitting down to rest is a feature, at least as soon as we get campfires and cooking pots to finally boil that rice, I believe it should be possible to open a can of beans while sitting and munching on it.
Same goes for drinking and all types of food. Drinking or eating something causes your character to stand up, but sitting down to have a rest and eat at the same time is not possible.
