I tried to join the server my brother is playing on to test things.
2 connections failed, the third worked. Now there are 2 copies of me. When I bandage one for testing it says: "bandaging unknown entity"

ok. We killed them and "hide buddy" so nobody can loot it/item duping

Something similar happened to me. Did not try to reproduce, but we kept the gear because why not.

We died like an hour later... such is dayz.
