When joining low population servers, I occasionally find a server that seems to pick my character up, put me in a random location, and I see around 10 other players spewing blood in the location it puts me. It resets all my items to starter items regardless of what I previously had. Then, it uploads my most recent "progress" (new character, random location) to the central servers and my character is now overwritten.
