I've used hammer as a weapon(added to the hotkey, used and switched to the fighting stance)find Zed and attacked it. After about 10 tries to hit with no result and even without hits sound, I self-disarmed and started to fight without hammer. Now hits started to produce the sound of hits and zed was defeated in the second round :)
