Killing the player when they disconnect while unconsc. or restrained, while a good idea on paper, would be poor in practice
New, WishlistPublic

Description

In update 0.30.113842, a countermeasure against abuse to the login system was added. From now on, whenever a player disconnects while being unconscious or restrained, they will be killed.

It's a good idea, but it's incredibly blind design. We are in a world where random crashes and disconnects are a thing. There are so many points of failure (game crash, hardware crash, internet outage, server outage) that this feature makes zero sense.

It's not so bad when you crash in other games (in a shooter you might lose the match when you crash, a crash in an MMORPG might make you lose money, exp and loot), but in the unique case of DayZ, making it so that in certain circumstances, you lose your character that might have hours or days of work put into it, for something 100% outside of their control, is not good design. Punishing the player for something entirely beyond their control is a cardinal sin in game design, especially with a punishment with this level of severity.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Be unconscious or restrained
  2. For whatever reason, including reasons beyond any player's control, be disconnected from the game, be it a disconnect, a game crash, a server crash, or something else
  3. You are dead.
Additional Information

In many online games (CS:GO, DotA2, LoL and others), when you disconnect, you have a short period of time where you are allowed to reconnect without punishment.

The recently introduced system to prevent abuse of DayZ's logging system can be improved (as opposed to being removed) by allowing the player a grace period of ~ 3 - 5 minutes to reconnect to the identical server without any penalty in the event of a crash. In the event of a server interrupt, there simply is no penalty since a reconnection cannot be assured.

I would imagine this is just a temporary dirty fix to avoid some other issues when reconnecting while unconscious or cuffed.

Okay, but leave the body in game so he can be killed and loot. Otherwise, the guy can just disconnect, wait some time (time for a friend to come, time to confuse the enemy) and come back without any punishment.

DayZ is a hard game, i would prefer to keep the hardcore punishment : dc when handcuff or unconscious, aggro by Zeds, in a fight should mean death. You shouldn't be able to avoid the consequences of your bad decisions in this game.
