I would press tab to bring up my inventory then drag and drop a equipped item, clothing and backpacks, onto the ground and it would still register as me wearing it and be on the ground. I would then try to equip a different item that was on the ground and I was unable to equip the other item. It normally takes multiple tries to unequip the item I have on.
