Like the summary states, when I have the flashlight equipped and turned on, it faces to the left. This makes it impossible to see what is in front of my character. When looting I have to look to the right so that the light shines forward so I can see whats in the room.

Like butcher said. Right now you have your "weapon" lowered, so it isnt pointing straight out. Pressing spacebar pulls it out and aims it forward. having your weapon out makes you move slightly slower, so you can lower it with the same button. Also makes you seem less threatening so maybe people wont shoot you. Not likely though.
