In the 2D editor, while moving an object, you can hold shift to start rotating it, then release shift to continue moving it.
In the 3D editor however, if you're moving an object, you have to first let go of it, then hold down shift, then start dragging on the object again. Then to go back to moving, you have to let go of it, release shift, then start dragging it.
This makes object placement significantly faster in the 2D editor.
