Loss of vehicle sound after returning from Alt+Tab
New, WishlistPublic

Description

Tested using DEV 1.55.134182

Alt+Tabbing out of ArmA causes ArmA to mute as expected, but Alt+Tabbing back does not restart all of the sound streams. Ambient seems to come back (wind, structural creaks and gunfire) but main engine does not.

Fixes itself if you change view to 3PP and back to 1PP. {F27944}

Steps To Reproduce

o Run ArmA
o Jump into a helo and fly around for a bit
o Alt+Tab out of ArmA for 5 - 10 secs
o Alt+Tab or click back into ArmA and resume flight

Additional Information

Captured the behaviour in my stream test here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu35slPXrHY&html5=1. (You don't have to watch the whole thing ;-)

I Alt+Tab out at ~0:30 in and Alt+Tab back ~0:40. Sound mutes as ArmA goes into the background, and when I Alt+Tab back you can hear the wind moise and ambient structural noises restart, but the main engine does not. Have only tested as pilot but can test in other slots if it is necessary.

Initial testing was done in MELB MH-6A, but have tested with vanilla AH-9 and RHS CH-47 with same results.

Hello, I've read your description, watched your video and tried to reproduce that issue with the development version 1.57.134182.

I did not experience the sound issues you are talking about. For me everything worked fine.

What Windows version are you using?
What sound device are you using?
Have you used modifications?
Does the sound issue appears if you don't use a streaming or recording software?

Best regards

Thanks for the feedback. To your questions:

OS: Win 10 Pro (x64)
SND: Logitech G430 Gaming Headset (Default)

Effect appears whether I'm using mods or not, and whether I'm using streaming/recording software or not.

Uploaded a shorter video showing my steps to reproduce: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlUNh693T5I&html5=1

Quick update: I thought that it might have something to do with the Logitech G430 setup, so changed the audio output to my monitors standard stereo output. Unfortunately the problem persists there as well.

Currently reinstalling all my audio drivers, etc. just in case and will retest when that's complete.

UPDATE: No change. Reinstalled board level chipset drivers, Logitech drivers for the G430 + Dolby 7.1 Surround. Same result after Alt+tabbing out and back.

One new quirk I noticed here and is in the video, this time when going 3PP and back to 1PP to try and fix, the audio fades on the first two attempts. Tested this with Bandicam running (hence the video) and without, and the results were the same.

Heading into speculation here:

Happens with all of the vehicles that I've tried. With land vehicles it happens with the idle engine sounds. With helos, the sound played when they are fully spooled up, etc. Perspective doesn't seem to matter. If you're in 3pp and Alt+Tab sound is gone when coming back.

Sound resumes again dependent on whether there is a change in filtering or a different sound is required by the engine. I.e. accelerating in a land vehicle, changing perspective (3PP/1PP) or turning off the engine. Firing weapons other actions play their sounds as usual but don't restart the missing sounds.

Ofc, this doesn't get me any closer to finding a cause and TBH I'm not really sure where to look for one.

That NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device makes me very suspicious. For what do you need it?

As far as I can see, you are using a Logitech G430 headset that has its own soundchip and drivers.

Please try following: Completely uninstall the NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device, mark your Logitech G430 as your primary sound device, start Arma 3 without modifications and try to reproduce the audio issue again.

Game files updated to DEV 1.57.134216

Uninstalled and disabled nVidia hardware. This simply disables the HD audio passthru to the GPUs HDMI output. It shouldn't be interferring with the normal audio operation.

Logitech has been default input/output throughout testing.

Have tested with every config of hardware and drivers that seems to make any sense and the audio behaves the same. Looped audio doesn't seem to be getting re-initialised when coming back from Alt+Tab.

Tried altering between Fullscreen/Window/Fullscreen Window with no difference.

Tested in 1.54.133741 Stable and the problem does not appear there no matter how I try to force it to ;-)

More telling, IMO, Commandeered my sons PC (he's running AMD/AMD vs my Intel/nVidia) and installed dev branch there with the same results, i.e. was able to duplicate the sound loss there on coming back from Al+Tabbing out.

Currently downloading the 1.56 RC to test there.

Doesn't seem to be a way to upload my .rpt file from the last server run on dev branch or my dxdiag.txt file but I have these if they are required.

Thanks

Yes please. If you can upload the latest rpt file after a quick reproduction session that would be great.

I am using a 10 years old "SB X-Fi Elite Pro" and I didn't have any problems so far. I did not tested my onboard sound card yet(deactivated), maybe the same can happen to me too.

Good news and bad news:

Good news: Lost all my report files due to negligent key pressing, but just running the versions again replaced those with no hassles.

Bad news: 1.56 RC appears to be displaying the audio behaviour the same as 1.57 Dev. There seems to be a few quirks in there as well complicating things a little, but sound still disappears on Alt+Tab.

Uploaded .rpt files for 1.54, 1.56 RC and 1.57 Dev. Also included DXDiag.txt.

Hello, I took my time and activated my onboard sound. I still can't manage to reproduce your sound issues. Everything is fine for me.

Thanks for the rpt-files. Maybe some of the developers can find the cause of the issue.

Just finished testing this again in 1.57.134593 and the issue appears now to be fixed. TY.

(NOTE: Just to confuse the issue I've had to replace my MB and HDDs in the last week so can't be 100% sure that it wasn't at my end. I'm using the note posted in the change log for build 134414 on the 9th of Feb to indicate that the devs may have actually found something to fix.)
