if you click preview to play a mission from editor, then click save and exit, you will have a continue button available. if you click this you return to the mission but can't get out again. clicking save and exit will save mission but keeps you in it. restart, same deal, i must press Alt-F4 to close game. Its the only way out.

load a mission
click preview (to start the mission)
press esc, click save and exit (to close the mission)
now press continue to return to the mission.
now press esc and click save and exit to get out again.
it will not return to editor

thank you for your feedback. I have tried this on stable vanilla version of the game and was not able to reproduce this issue.
Are you running any mods with the game? If so, please try to run the game without mods. Mods can often be the root of the problem. Should it help, you can try running the game with mods activated one by one to find which of them might be causing these problems.
Should this not help, please verify your game files via Steam?

After then, please try to run your Arma as an admin.

Ok, i think i have figured out what triggers this to happen.
I you go into parameters and check box MISSION FILE (EDITOR)
then select a mission to be autoloaded when you start arma,
then this issue occurs.
