Let AI squads make use of advanced formation commands
New, WishlistPublic

Description

Current state:
AI will keep formation and move around according to their waypoints.

Desired endstate:
AI should be able to have a better organization in their formations. When moving between waypoints without enemy contact but in "AWARE" mode, AI should be more sensible. This includes:

  1. Allow AI to let individual move ahead to make contact with minimal force possible (point man, ADVANCE command). It is common practice in military to allow the squad to manoeuvre and prevent getting pinned or overwhelmed completely by local fire superiority. Having some distance to the point man allows manoeuvrability.
  2. Allow AI to let the last man in formation to look behind regularly because it is his responsibility to watch the back of the squad. Maybe at each waypoint the AI squad reached.
  3. When enemy is spotted and squad is not engaged by enemy fire, report but do not engage until the AI squad has brought all of its guns to the front. Currently, the AI squad is wasting the element of surprise.

AI Control / Commanding
Steps To Reproduce
  1. Place a squad in editor
  2. Place a second enemy squad
  3. Create some waypoints to let it move to the enemy squad

See that the behaviour is very basic when not in contact without the minimal safety considerations described above. The squad will keep the formation and will never look behind. The first soldier detecting the enemy will also open fire immediately even if the squad is has not brought all guns to the front, wasting the element of surprise.
