It has been an annoying thing that you have not much surrounding perception except audio, and it is especially dangerous when you are driving or flying.
Also the stuff unloads when you go into the map, so it takes a few seconds to get out of the map. When you are in the heat of battle, that a few seconds counts.
Having a PIP screen in the map view means that you have at least some type of visual surrounding perception and can avoid a lot of accidents.
Actually I dont know if a view in the map screen is called a PIP.
But I hope you know what I mean.
I agree, but it's not PIP, and there's the TAO folding map mod which is what you've described.
i would enjoy something like a folded map at the ground where you just can view the ground and a bit around (just a high resolution texture version of the map) or something like that

stand still and do it while youre safe
