Make GPS more accurate - 10 digits position instead of current 6 digits
Reviewed, LowPublic

Description

Map grids should adapt to highlight the advantage of having a GPS with you:

  • stay at 6 digits if no GPS
  • upgrade to 10 digits when character has GPS

Example: 029010 -> 0295501088

While making another report, I've realized, that the numbers are there already, but they are visible only in the editor. Why not ingame?

I don't see how your map (a piece of paper) could have more gridlines when you pickup a GPS.

I do agree that the GPS should be able to give a 8- or even 10-digit position, but should be configurable by the mission maker.

And when you're looking at your map you can also check your GPS for an accurate position, it just requires some comon sense to figure out when your position is at the map.

While i can agree with having a 10 digit GPS, i still want the 6 digit map !
One of the difficulties on which you have to train IRL, is to "split" the map grids from 6 digits into 8 digits / 10 digits, example:

GPS

05515 06125

MAP

STEP 1 055 061 (identify the general grid you're at)

STEP 2 0551 (identify you're in the lower left side of the "square" of step 1

STEP 3 05515 (identify you're in the middle of the "square" of step 2

STEP 4 0612 (identify you're in the lower center of the "square" of step 1

STEP 5 06125 (identify you're in the middle of the "square" of step 4)

That's how it's done in real life and that's how it should be in the game, even with a 10 digit GPS

EDIT: Ofcourse this is based on UTM coord type

12 digits is perfect for artillery and bombing (when you manually input coordinates in arty computer, likes in M109A1 Paladin, MLRS, etc...), current actions in 2035 so 12 digit a lot better!

@Grezvany13: Not "the paper map itself", but it would simulate having a GPS with a moving map, which would be used instead of paper one, when having a GPS.

@Kid18120: I'm trained in cartography and navigation and sometimes I put a ruler or protractor against the screen. I have no problem with your method and I can navigate accurately without a GPS. I don't even need a compass, a sun and watch is all I need (it works also in Arma btw :)). But I just want something more modern and fitting year 2035.

My real GPS has moving map and is accurate to 2m. It allows for marking things seen on the map and reading accurate coordinates of them, along with distance and bearing from me. And it's a rather basic model of a GPS receiver.

"My real GPS has moving map and is accurate to 2m. It allows for marking things seen on the map and reading accurate coordinates of them"

I don't question it does, the fact is in the game when you press 'M' or whatever key you have for the map, it's like bringing up your paper map.
Infact the GPS ingame also has a moving map (in trasparency, since it's a HUD-like GPS) and allows you to see landmarks etc.

Btw i'd be interested in the sun+watch method you were talking about. Does that technique have a proper name i can search for ? :D

I just use the watch in an opposite way (I align the hour hand with its own shadow), so that the half of the angle between the hour hand and 12 o'clock points at the north. It's easier for me to do it that way. Never owned a digital watch ;)

But the HUD map is small and not scrollable, while the "M" map is.

If you mean the GPS map (RCTRL + M) and not the normal map (M), then I'm fine with the suggestion.

Although in that case I suggest to make the GPS map zoomable:

  • 100x100 mtr : 10-digit grid
  • 1000x1000 mrt : 8-digit grid
  • 10000x10000 mtr : 6-digit grid

In all cases you, the player, are at the center op the map. No direction is given (like compass) and no other interactions are available (like placing markers).
Your grid location should be placed underneath the map.

And ofcourse the GPS still has a small UI compared to the full-screen map.

The best thing would be to have an additional item, along with the paper map and GPS in the glasses: a military GPS receiver, with a moving map and all kinds of interactions available there.

Check out RPDA - Ruggedized Personal Digital Assistant. Having this would be nice! Our current HUD GPS would be tied to tactical glasses (having glasses means having GPS on the HUD) and GPS slot would be used by RPDA item instead.

But I'm realistic and I understand, that the developers have much work with more serious issues. Because of that I've asked for something relatively easy and quick, which will make the GPS more useful, instead of more complex request/idea.
