When starting Arma 3 from Steam the game starts up but crashes during the startup process with the following message:

"Warning: preNLOD format in object a3\characters_f\footstep_l.p3d"

  2. click on "play"
  3. after a while the message will popup after which the program has closed down.

Update:

verifying the integrity of the game cache in Steam seems to have solved the problem

  • Right click on Arma 3 Alpha in Steam, select properties
  • Goto tab local files
  • Select Verify Integrity of Game Cache
  • After verification this re-downloaded 6 files and game seems to start normally
