You can hit F to change rate of fire. However, only when the HUD showing your ammo is visible. Once it has faded out, you have to press it twice to switch. So you have to press F to get the HUD to appear, then hit F again to switch fire mode.

This causes great grief for me every time I'm in a fire fight and need to change fire rate for whatever reason.
