To my knowledge, this is affecting dynamic gas zones only (however may extend to permanent contaminated areas also).
Gas is invisible. On Xbox. Don't know you're in it until it's too late.
Have noted that on occasion it can be invisible from one direction but visible from the opposite direction also.
