Microphone Mic cutting in and out [Solved]
New, NormalPublic

Description

Recently I upgraded from a socket 1155 Xeon to a AM4 Ryzen 5500, reinstalled Windows etc. etc. From my own DayZ experience, everything is fine. I can hear others and yet from their perspectives, my mic is constantly cutting in and out.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Turn on PC.
  2. Load up Discord.
  3. Phone buddies/group call, talk to buddies, buddies can hear/speak to me. Everything is fine.
  4. Run DayZ launcher or the DayZ SA launcher to play DayZ.
  5. Loose the ability to speak coherently as my mic then keeps cutting in and out.

OK, so after a couple of hours investigation.. here are my findings, Mic & Speakers (M&S) are working fine in Windows (using Sound recorder etc) - Internet browser also works fine (Using any M&S website) - Discord also, the M&S are working fine. The only time that the audio cuts out from my mic is... when I load up DayZ 😒

Additional Information

To attempt to resolve this I have;

-Verified that my DayZ files are validated (DayZ, Properties, Local Files, Validate)
-Reinstalled Sound Driver, stopped using RTX voice noise cancellation software. However, no different.
-Clean reinstall of Windows, resetting everything up again.
-Speedtested my own internet connection (8ms latency, 95Mbps Down, 49MBps up)
-Earlier, I even tried a difference microphone, but was also happening with that one so I figured the mic itself is actually fine.

Then I went about a little internet research and to the best of my opinion I would think that this issue is being caused by a fairly unique PC component shared by the few of us who are experience this problem. This problem isn't anything to do with Microphones or speakers, however audio hardware or namely driver software running this hardware would be more likely where I would start to try and spot a conflict?

So, my motherboard is a Asus B550 Plus, that uses the Realtek ALC887 7.1-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. The DayZ Game Version is1.20.155981 & the Launcher is 1.6.155752

Some piece of information that may help - When switching my Discord microphone audio device from Default to one of my two microphone devices (Blue Yeti or HyperX Cloud boom mic) the mic will work again for 5 or so seconds before it starts to cut out again.

Event Timeline

Just updated my BIOS from 2806 (2022/12/12) to 3002 (2023/03/14) unfortunately the saame problem still persists :-(

Suffice to say I'm disappointed by the lack of any replies..

I've fresh installed today, Win11, no RTX voice to complicate matters.

Problem persists. I'm have to help out if you need any further information but this problem seems to me to be either this motherboard or maybe a windows update..

..I cannot understand why nobody else seems to be facing this issue?

It's ruined DayZ for me ;-(

Well at least I've got a reply! Thank-you BoeMan, it's a start ;-D

I too worked through the linked thread, and equally don't have a ' Enhancement' tab, but figuring the date was 2020 I'm presuming that may of been a Windows 10 thing?

I've gone through all my tabs and definitely have no further controls for "Noise Suppression and Acoustic Echo Cancellation feature".

Now Discord does have these options in Settings, Voice & Video and I've gone through and tested all of those options intensively with a friend on the other end of a Discord call and he felt that the options I had (default) were the best overall. We tried each item, one by one.

Primarily this mainly only happens when playing DayZ, however it has occurred every now and then when playing other games.

I just don't get it.. I had a SSD on my old Xeon, everything worked. I upgraded to my Ryzen and still continued to use that same SSD but now with these audio problems. Since then, I've clean installed several times over the past three months and still I'm no closer to resolving this issue.

I'm actually tempted to use my spare SSD to install W10 and see if I still face these problems.. Personally I feel the problem originates from this motherboard/audio drivers. But I also wont discount a Windows update for being a possible cause.

OK, so I've done some pretty intensive experimentation...

  • Fresh install W11 (Same)
  • Fresh install W10 (Same)

Then I decided to have a rewire.. and then the penny dropped.. and I feel such a plonker..

So, back in my Xeon days, the CPU was insufficient for me to use OBS to record and play DayZ. Therefore I bought an Elgato 4K HDMI to USB streaming device. In my Xeon days, I never plugged my mic into the Elgato passthrough. Hence, never recorded my own audio and ALSO never noticed any issues..

Upgrading to my Ryzen and I kept the same setup however I did plug my mic into the Elgato. My Cloud Atlas headset has a single lead (for both mic and headphones) that goes into a 3.5mm jack. There is also an audio extension that disappears down the back of my desk and for some STUPID reason I just assumed this was a USB plug on the end of the lead. I was too lazy to bother to look and overlooked this whole thing (Like a dumbass).

I know that sound like I contradicted myself, but events were spread out and I had forgotten previous events. What made me realise was that I ordered a PCI-E x1 USB card, to try and discount the whole 5000 series AMD process in a B550 variant motherboard, that was know to have USB issues before a BIOS fix went out.

Installed the card and was poking around the rear of my PC and looking for my USB end to my headset.. couldn't find it and the penny dropped. It wasn't a USB connection so this wasn't going to help me diagnose the problem.

Due care and diligence (I am saying that hindsight is a wonderful thing) - Check everything at least twice, don't be lazy like I was, don't assume and fix anything.

Spent the day yesterday online with one of my buddies, problem solved. Sorry for being a pain in the ass Bohemia. Marked as solved.
