Lol no you don't, sadly this is a known issue they are trying to fix with the new driving simulator from arma, but not yet fixed. Anyway, there is no possible way

what most likely happen, is you/server/anything lagged out, that's when the car went airborne.. but in the mean time you kept pressing forward, or at the least didn't brake. car hit a tree/object and you died from that.
If this was official servers, they don't admin those. and most respectful PVP community servers wouldn't return your gear, unless it was an RP server.
Basically any ping over 80ms try to avoid cars if you value your loadout.
