The world render distance of the game is a hidden setting that can only be changed by changing the 'overall quality' video setting. The DayZ video settings can show the exact same values while still having a big visual and performance difference in game.

If you change the 'overall quality' video setting to ultra then change all the separate settings to the lowest setting you still have the general render distance set to 'ultra'. Meaning that a player who set their 'overall quality' video setting to ultra before adjusting all other settings to the same as the low 'overall quality' video setting has a considerably lower framerate than someone who set their 'overall quality' video setting to low in the first place even though their graphics settings show the exact same values. ('overall quality' video setting showing 'custom')
This of course also works any other way. Changing the 'overall quality' video setting to low and then adjusting all the setting separately to ultra/high will result in still having a low render distance even though all the settings seem to be showing high values.
There needs to be an extra separate setting for (general) render distance that can be adjusted separately from the 'overall quality' video setting and is not hidden within it.

I wish the engine could handle more render distance. I max it out in the config file every time since I'm on a 3070 but most servers have this limited really low.
Sadly this also just gives me a disadvantage though.
Hiding in a field, you think you're in grass but you're in plain sight for anyone that has their render distance turned down, or is just outside the bubble.
