Melee breaking animations

Description

Having a game where being able to silently melee infected is pretty much a necessity, it's a shame that melee is so broken by having infected basically pass through you while attacking each other.

It seems like this stems from the melee animations all including a hard lunge forward during attack. Why, when striking, does a character have to step forward? I can swing an axe, or punch w/o stepping forward.
