When looking at a glowing firewall at a distance it first appears that the fire is getting duller (which would be correct as you move away from it), however, there is a distance where the brightness of the fireplace causes the light from it to suddenly increase.

The light spill from houses also seems to change from a few windows at short range, to a entire side of the house.
