Steps To Reproduce
At the moment "G" drops your current item directly under your feet.
Suggestion: Holding "G", will create a ghost form of your object so you can place it exactly where you want. (similar to barrel placement option)
Furthermore scrolling your mouse will rotate the item to fine tune the placement.
When throwing gets re-implemented in whatever capacity, it's just a matter of holding right mouse button first and then holding G to throw.
Additional Information
Small QOL changes like this are vital and great and add so much to the game as a sum of all the parts. Eg. the Hold F to hold in hands from 1.03 is such a great change even though so small.
