Pears, apples, mushrooms all show the last known inventory space/size when food is in hand. Tested multiple foods with multiple different items that had varied inventory space taken up. Put backpack/pants/shirt in hand. Drop that item. Put apple/pear/mushroom in hand. You will see a number to the upper right of food when in hand.
