I'm not sure if the mining mechanic is supposed to be fully implemented at the moment but it is currently broken. When you approach a rock with the sledgehammer in hand you get the prompt to mine the rock. When you then hold RT you get a loading wheel of it trying to begin mining but never starts and you then get stuck in the sledgehammer stance and have to relog.
