Also, every time would manage to find something in one of the barracks, the loot node seemed like it was out of place, and the item was always floating in the air, either up near the ceiling or in the middle of one of the rooms.

Referencing to the last part of the description ^^^... I know packing every single room with loot would be ludicrous, but maybe have at least one item in each room since there are more than five of those barracks in that southern compound??
