Different Arma 3 crashes with black screen, minimized window or closed window
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

Dear Arma team,

I'm experiencing different crashes for Arma 3.

It doesn't depend, on which server or which gamemode I'm playing. I can't play any single round, where nothing happens. This is very annoying.

Following some hardware specs:

Here you'll find some log files as well as a dxdiag report: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3L6fl_vVZpTcndiMDZlcC0ySEE

I'm not sure, but I'm sometimes getting the "out of memory" error message. I also could find this in the latest log file. Can it be, that the activated onboard graphic causes this issue? My Arma 3 uses a maximum of 2.4 GB of the 16 GB memory, so this can't be the lack of memory and my NVIDIA graphic has 8 GB memory. The Intel GPU has only 2 GB memory. Very rare is the memory error, that Arma 3 couldn't read the memory. Due of this error, I've tested my memory multiple times for more than 8 hours using memtest86, but it always reported, that it couldn't found any issue.

I couldn't find any way to reproduce it. It just happens when I play.

Additional Information

When the game crashes with a closed window, the processes are still running.

I've activated both GPUs, because I don't want to use my "high-end" graphic card, when the onboard GPU can also handle it.

Other games like Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, H1Z1: King of the Kill as well as Grand Theft Auto V are working fine and without any issue.

@Sebbo, a few questions for you.

Would you be able to try playing official multiplayer game modes such as End Game? You can filter for official servers.

Would you be able to try playing single player such as the campaign, showcases, or challenges? As with the above this is to help diagnose the issue.

Are there any patterns to the game crashes such as something similar happening just before the crash?

Here are some possible solutions:

Try restarting your computer and then verifying the integrity of the game cache for Arma 3.

  1. Restart your computer and launch Steam
  2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
  3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
  4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.

Try all of the possible solutions listed on the Arma 3 Unusual process exit article on the Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki.

Try switching to and playing on the profiling game branch. After downloading new data verify the integrity of the game cache.

• profiling branch (special performance + profiling build - requires access code: CautionSpecialProfilingAndTestingBranchArma3), alternative download of needed binary possible from Dwarden's dropbox

If the issue persists after trying all of the above possible solutions then use the Arma 3 Launcher to prepare a new troubleshooting report and then upload the report to the feedback tracker for the developers to review.

First of all: I wish you all a happy new year 2017! :)

@Jawsh, End Game and Single Player (Campaign) works without any problem, but there is never as much as action as on King of the Hill servers with +30 players. I just want to mention that. Arma may just worked fine, because it don't had to render and load such a lot.

Well... I get the blackscreen or a minimized window most of the time, when somebody shot on me and I was killed by this shot. It happens immediately without any delay. But I also had this issue already, while I was just flying with a helicopter.

This memory error is very rare and occurs random.

Thanks for your possible solutions. Unfortunately, I've already tried the "verifying the integrity of the game cache" method a lot of times without any success. The possible solutions from the community wiki did also not help.

Next, I'll try the profiling branch and test it on such a King of the Hill server. If it crashes again, I'll immediately create a new troubleshooting report from the Arma 3 launcher.

Hello,

First, go to C:\Users\*username*\Documents\Arma 3 and copy the whole folder.
Second, delete all missions saves and your profile settings.
Third, copy back just your profile settings.
Fourth, launch the game.

Let me know if the problem will persist.

@Jawsh, with the profiling branch it took much more longer until I got a blackscreen (the first crash).

I've uploaded the latest troubleshooting report here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3L6fl_vVZpTcndiMDZlcC0ySEE

@Alwin, thanks. I'll backup my files and test it.

@Alwin, sorry for the delay.

No, this didn't fix the issue. It still persist.

Hello,

You can try the last possible solution called All in One Runtimes tool.

  1. Download All in One Runtimes
  2. Tool will repair your Visual C++, Java SE, Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Shockwave Player, Silverlight, DirectX
  3. Restart computer
  4. Uninstall the tool
  5. Launch the game

The tool will help in some cases so try it and let me know.

Sorry for the delay. I had no time yet.

Since All in One Runtimes, I had currently only the following problem yet: When I die, it still minimize the game sometimes.

I'll test it further tomorrow and come back, if I'm still experiencing the crashes or not.

It just crashed again with the low (5) FPS bug. :(

Are there any further actions, which can be done by me? What are the next steps?

You´re out of memory so try to open Task Manager and close all background processes. Try to set another memory allocator (tbb4malloc_bi or jemalloc_bi) n maxvram and maxmem parameters.

Try to delete your profile folder again (create a backup) and try to start the game.

The file yourprofilename.vars.Arma3Profile must be deleted.
Path: C:\Users\*username*\Documents\Arma 3

The last times, when I played, I only had the issue, that my game crashes with a blackscreen or it closes the game window (process is still running in Task Manager) and sometimes I still have these annoying FPS bugs.

Did you try to re-install your GPU drivers? Clear some space at your HDD or re-located game folder to SSD?

It´s common OUT OF MEMORY issue sou it would be resolved by common possible solutions listed above. Also you can re-install your Arma 3 or chcec you game version which is 1.66.139586.

Let me know.

Yes, I've reinstalled it. I've even upgraded my GTX from a 770 to 1070.

My Windows and Arma 3 are already installed on a Samsung 850 Pro 1 TB SSD.

My Arma 3 launcher says this:

Launcher version: 1.5.139565
Game version: 1.66.139586
Branch: main / beta branch not specified

It seems to be the latest version.

I never ran out of memory. My GPU has 8 GB memory and my RAM has even 16 GB. Only a max. of 8 GB are used of these 16 GB and Arma is only using 2.5 GB when it crashes.

Hey,

since the stable release of the x64 version of Arma, I don't had any problem again yet.

We can close this issue. Thanks for your support! :)
