These are the steps I went through to make it happen
1)Wear gasmask
2)Put it in your hands
3)Throw it quickly

I tried to reproduce it shortly after without success.

The throwing animation was the one used some time ago when throwing a long meele weapon like an axe (I also had one in my inventory).
It can be fixed by triggering another animation, I drank a water bottle.
