We are now driving around rovers with very direct feedback. Push forward and the rover goes forward immidiately and you can see where it ended up, alowing for corrections.
But in reality it takes a while (3 to 22 minutes) for a signal to cross the vast distance between Earth and Mars. So real rover drivers have to put in a set of movements, send it, wait, have the rover move, wait and get a feedback. So if the distance is at its largest, you'll have to wait about 45 minutes for every manouver!
What if we made that seconds in stead of minutes and applied it as an option (like the real time mode). Now you have a use for the abillity of the rover to rotate while not moving in amy direction.
I imagine the driving would look like this:
Manoeuvre 1:
- Drive 5.0 meters forward
- Rotate 45 degrees left
- Drive 2.3 meters forward
Manoeuvre2:
- Drive 0.3 meter backward
- Rotate 5 degrees right
- Take a picture
(or: get to sit helplessly as your rover drives off a cliff because you overestimated the distance to the edge).
I think it would be more fun (challenging) gameplay and more realistic. If it should be a feature or a mod, is up to the powers that be.
