Barrels and containers that are placed on the ground next to a tree (within the branches) are not accessible until you cut down the tree. The container can not be picked up, opened, view internal items, or be interacted with in any way.

You can cut down a tree and then access container but after all this should be fixed.

I can confirm containers are inaccessible with the default ui. The current system makes trying to hide any kind of stash next to impossible, as vegetation cannot be taken advantage of.
