Torches do not go back into your inventory after being lit, normally, but if you drink a can of soda while holding the burning torch, the game puts the torch in your inventory and extinguishes the light from it, until you have finished drinking and it puts the torch back in your hand. At this point you can freely store the burning torch in your jacket or pants, and take it out later, still burning.
