Hello Robert,
To begin with I would recommend that you try to verify the integrity of the game cache:
- Start Steam and right click on DayZ in your game library (make sure that the game is not running).
- Select the tab labeled "Local Files".
- Click on the button labeled "Verify integrity of game cache...".
- Start DayZ once the process is complete.
If this does not solve the problem, then try upgrading to the experimental version and subsequently downgrade to the stable version.
In case this does not solve your problem either, I can have a look at your account in the character database if you send me a link for your Steam Profile ID.

Problem solved. Following some suggestion from the Forum, I had set up DayZ to run with the following options, to try to improve game performance:
-nosplash -skipIntro -world=empty
Removing the options restored the normal behaviour.
