Hey, this is an extremely common issue currently, I don't know what the developers are doing, but it's known by us players. A temporary fix I know that works often is if this issue occurs upon joining a server, DO NOT move or even look around. Don't touch a single key, just immediately leave the server via the escape key, and join another server. By doing this it won't overwrite your previous character file. In any case, this NEEDS to be fixed.

EDIT: To add on to what jbutler said, I have noticed as well that it most commonly happens after a server restart.

I haven't had bad luck like you guys have. I know certain servers seem to do a character reset when joining in. Also I have lost characters when I join a server too soon when a server restarts.

This is really annoying!

Ah, the most common death in DayZ was being shot by another player, or slaughtered by a hoard of zombies. Well, it's sad to say now most deaths are caused by this utterly broken game.

Thank you for sending us your feedback regarding this issue. Unfortunately, this problem is a known issue that has previously been reported. The devs are aware of the problem related to character save loss and they'll be working on fixing it.
