This is the first time it's happened to me - it seems that this could happen and be replicated consistently, which might be a problem. I had moved the items from my backpack and into the tent. some of the items were not technically in the tent's inventory, but were on the tent floor and inside a backpack on the tent floor. However, the duplication occurred with items both inside and outside of inventories.
