Commander Role Feedback
- The Commander role is an excellent concept. If implemented well this will be compelling and would definitely appeal to many players which will elevate gameplay for all players in a round of Conflict
- I've tried Commander role numerous many now and I've found it to be a difficult, frustrating and broadly unenjoyable experience
- A good Commander is essential for effective command and communication and they need to be enabled as much as possible
- But current Commander interfaces are clunky, unintuitive, and lack integration - it's a truly painful experience
- Releasing the current Commander interface to stable would result in a highly substandard experience for the Commander and other players and would be a huge missed opportunity
- Below are my suggestions to improve the concept of Conflict HQ Commander:
1) Interface & UX Improvements
-Redesigning the Commander interface to enable a more stream-lined and integrated experience is critically essential
-Implement an intuitive "RTS style" interface via maps to command squads/units. E.g.:
- Left-click to select squads(s) on the map
- Right-click on map (with squads(s) selected) to issue contextual commands:
- Friendly base selected: hold, build services, resupply, etc
- Enemy base selected: seize, recon, fire support request (chopper / mortars), etc
- In open space: establish a base, build fortifications, move to position for recon, ambush, etc
- Right-click on select unit should allow:
- Direct radio comms connection
- Unit info: player list showing SL, names, ranks and role, exp levels
- Commander should be able to:
- Select squads via an “Order of Battle / Squad List” menu (i.e. like the current Groups list) to view and assign objectives
- This "Squad list" (e.g. Groups menu) should link directly to selecting squads on the map
- Annotate and free-draw on the map, with ability to remove markers/comments
- Create new squads and provide exp points bonus for players who fill those roles
- All squad / unit info should include:
- Squad name
- Squad leader name
- Radio frequency
2) Map Visibility
-All Transport and Engineer roles should be visible on the map
-Supply drivers’ locations should be visible on the map
-All AI transport team locations need to appear on the map
-Base radio ranges should be clearly visible on map, including when placing a new "establish base" objective, so the Commander can clearly see how bases "connect" together, and place bases at suitable distances apart
3) AI Supply
- AI supply system needs serious reconsideration:
- Currently AI supply is prone to getting stuck or falling down terrain
- The Commander needs to be able to delete AI transport teams via logistics menu or map selection
- Consider replacing with “virtual” AI for better reliability until AI is improved and fit for purpose
4) Misc
- Commander should have:
- Long-range radio communications (e.g. via a Command Post supply box - not an armoury supply point)
- Entrenching tool (via personal inventory)
- All Commander interfaces (i.e. operations, combat ops, logistics) should allow radio frequency changes while in the screen
- Add a tutorial scenario specifically for the Commander role
- Provide extra experience/rank points bonus for players completing Commander assigned objectives
- Conflict HQ Commander game mode needs to be an additional game mode, not a replacement of "regular" Conflict, as the 2 modes are very different and will appeal to different players
