A vaccine typically contains an agent (or several agents) that resembles an associated structure of disease-causing microorganism, which is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or its surface proteins. Advances in immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics and genomics have added new perspectives to the vaccinology field. The use of highly purified recombinant proteins allows the targeting of immune responses focused against few protective antigens without the potential risks which might come along with traditional vaccines such as attenuated and natural macromolecules.
